Our History

Where it all began...

Founded in 1945, St. Austell Players (the “Players”) led a successful if nomadic existence until the Sixties.  Joining with other ‘artistically-inclined’ groups they formed the St. Austell Society of Arts and had a base at 87, Truro Road with, eventually, a permanent theatre.  This has been the venue for well over 300 Players’ productions.  Our performing home is now managed by the St Austell Arts Centre.

Through the years, St Austell Players has been a leading amateur group in Cornwall, usually staging four productions a year, ranging from farces and murder mysteries to Shakespeare, Chekhov, Oscar Wilde and other classics, as well as more modern plays.  Below you can find an almost complete list of Players’ productions to date.

Since its formation in the 1960s, St Austell Players have been an active member of Cornwall Drama Association.  Most of our productions are adjudicated for inclusion in the annual Theatre Festival and we are proud of the many awards for Best Costume, Set, Directors and Actors we have won.

Most recently these include:

Best Costume 2017 for Importance of Being Earnest

Best Actress and Physical Theatre 2019 for Accidental Death of an Anarchist

Best Set 2020 for The Lion In Winter.

Best Costume 2022 Macbeth

Best costume 2023 Arcadia

And from NODA Best Comedy  2022 Bouncers and Shakers.
